Hey everyone, I have a bit of a situation and need some advice. So, I was casually scrolling through Instagram and saw my ex’s story that I thought was kind of interesting. Without thinking, I screenshotted it to show a friend. Then it hit me—does Instagram notify them when you screenshot their story?? 
Now I’m low-key panicking because I don’t want it to seem awkward or like I’m creeping. Does anyone know if they’ll get a notification? Or am I in the clear? 
Don’t worry, Instagram doesn’t notify users if you screenshot their story, post, or even a DM (unless it’s a disappearing photo/video in DMs).
We actually tested this ourselves to be sure, and here’s what we found:
- We had one person post a regular story and take screenshots of it from another account – no notification was sent.
- We also took screenshots of regular posts and DM conversations (non-disappearing messages), and again, no alerts were triggered.
- Finally, we sent disappearing photos in DMs and took a screenshot of them – that’s when Instagram did send a notification saying the image was screenshotted.
So, if you accidentally screenshotted your ex’s regular story, you’re totally safe. Instagram doesn’t notify for that. Just be cautious if you’re dealing with disappearing DMs because those will alert the other person!
