Occasionally, Windows might not read your user profile correctly, such as if your antivirus software is scanning your computer while you try to log on. Before you follow the methods here, try restarting your computer and logging on with your user account again to resolve the issue. If you restart your computer and it does not resolve this issue, use the following methods to resolve this issue.
Note You must be able to log on to an administrator account to fix your user profile or copy your data to a new account. Before you resolve the issue, log on to Windows by using another account that has administrative permissions, or restart in safe mode to log on with the built-in administrator account. For more information about how to start in safe mode, visit the following Microsoft website:

Method 1: Fix the user account profile
To fix the user account profile, follow these steps:
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Click Start, type regedit in the Search box, and then press ENTER.
In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList
In the navigation pane, locate the folder that begins with S-1-5 (SID key) followed by a long number.
Click each S-1-5 folder, locate the ProfileImagePath entry in the details pane, and then double-click to make sure that this is the user account profile that has the error.
If you have two folders starting with S-1-5 followed by some long numbers and one of them ended with.bak, you have to rename the .bak folder. To do this, follow these steps:
Right-click the folder without .bak, and then click Rename. Type .ba, and then press ENTER.
Right-click the folder that is named .bak, and then click Rename. Remove .bak at the end of the folder name, and then press ENTER.
Right-click the folder that is named .ba, and then click Rename. Change the .ba to .bak at the end of the folder name, and then press ENTER.
If you have only one folder starting with S-1-5 that is followed by long numbers and ends with .bak. Right-click the folder, and then click Rename. Remove .bak at the end of the folder name, and then press ENTER.
Click the folder without .bak in the details pane, double-click RefCount, type 0, and then click OK.
Click the folder without .bak, in the details pane, double-click State, type 0, and then click OK.
Close Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.
Log on again with your account.

Not the good solution
Hi Kevin. None of your suggestions work, I have tried every single step of them. Here is my problem: A new account has been created on a PC (account has standard rights) but every time when I log on with the account I get “The User Profile Service failed the logon”.
Interestingly, the account is not visible in the registry with the strings described in your post. The default folders are also not created in the c:users directory.
When at prompt I enter “net user” the account is visible though. PC is virus free.
Running Windows 7 with latest patches installed.
I am assuming there is a corruption somewhere but am at a loss where to search else.
Hello Kevin,
in my situation, under Windows 7, the account gets created but nothing gets written to registry and the default folder structure is also not created. I can’t login to thew newly created account due to the “User Profile Service failed the logon” error. The account does exist as it is visible at command prompt.
Tried all suggestions but can’t get the account to work. Any other thoughts?
Hi Kevin, I commented a little bit earlier…my computer just finished doing a full system restore from almost two weeks ago (the last point it could restore to was the same day it started not letting me log on) and it STILL WILL NOT LET ME LOG ON. Please help, I have been logging into the admin account to use my laptop for the last two weeks and I have all my info and pictures AND my iTunes account on my other profile. I really need help.
Umm well I managed to get my HP Pavillion into Safe Mode and Networking perfectly fine, but when I typed in my password it still said User profile service failed the logon. What do I do? It won’t let me into my account at all.
This fixed two workstations for me too. It is usually the likely culprit if you have Visual Studio installed (specifically 2010 or 2012). Ironic that it’s an issue with a Microsoft Windows development tool installing a file where it shouldn’t on a Microsoft Windows OS.
You have no restore points available then. You will need to create a new profile and copy over the data.
Your best bet is to create a new user account then.
This restore point didnt work
