How to Fix Wi-Fi Not Connecting Automatically on Windows Startup?

Possible. When you power the system off and then turn it back on what do the “Network Connections” show for the LAN/ethernet adapter?

Regedit fixed my problem. Thanks for the tip!

Is there a registry entry that can make Windows 10 auto connect to its Ethernet LAN adapter? I get frequent power outages, the system is set to auto boot after power failures, but the DSL (C1000A) modem takes like 3 to 5 minutes to reconnect to the internet. Once reconnected my machine NEVER auto connects. I must reboot the machine even though the internet is already active. I can auto connect if I use the network diagnosis feature, proof that the system can auto connect without reboot, but it needs to continuously try to auto connect after a power failure on its own. I can’t be with this machine 24/7. Why do they make it to where you can auto connect to WIFI internet but NOT Ethernet LAN networks?

thanks for the suggestion and response.

I don’t like to block updates…so the same windows 10 updates occurred again after I rolled back and this time afterwards I couldn’t connect either wireless or via Ethernet.
ASUS customer support was excellent, tech walked me thru multiple fix attempts, finally resetting BIOS to default and restarting modem enabled my desktop to connect to the internet. Then I had to reinstall the LAN driver so my wired connection would work.
not sure if this is unique to ASUS this microsoft crap makes me want to buy an iMac.

You can hide the specific update that causes this. see How to Disable Updates on Windows 10

I run an almost brand new ASUS desktop that came preinstalled with win 10. I download hardwired with an ethernet cable, wonderfully stupid Microsoft wipes the lan driver each time they push out their dopey windows 10 updates…have to reinstall the drivers…wifi drivers are not affected.

MickeySoft has ticked me off with numerous things like this in ALL their versions of windows, office product. They can fix them, but, they refuse, leaving customers in a place of stupid. Win 10 after all the fixes in - still refuses to auto-connect with remembered wifi spots.

Kevin, I recently purchased an Ellipsis 8 Tablet from Verizon and am having difficulty connecting it to my AT&T 802 LG router. It says poor signal strength and no connectivity. my desk top HP Pavilion has no problem connecting to same modem. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and now i can’t see the signal strength graph like before. In settings, manage wi-fi settings, manage known networks, should I share or not? right now it is on not share and I’m not sure if that is the problem or not. I can place the Tablet next to the modem and it still says poor signal strength.

Samu - try enabling network bridge for the ‘Local Area Connection’ under ‘Network Connections’ . My WIFI was completely blocked until i did this. You can then disable the bridge. I upgraded from Win7 to Win10,

check your email.

When I click “Manage Wi-Fi Settings” and scroll down, there is no “Manage known networks” option. I don’t have it where it’s supposed to be.

I got stuck at step 2, because when I click on the WiFi icon in the taskbar, the listed dialogue of “Advanced Options” and “Manage WiFi Settings” does not exist.

I set the metric value for wifi to 9999 and for lan to 1, but as you can see in the screenshot, windows is still preferring the lan connection (more bytes sent and received). You can also see that the wifi speed is rated 13 times higher than the lan speed.

In case it is relevant, I am using an old router that i flashed dd-wrt on as a bridge, the mode it is in is called client bridge.

I have now plugged out the lan cable and the system check command is running. I will post the results when it is done.

Sorry for not doing this yesterday, something important came up and I went to sleep when I got home.

When you go home, please send me a screen shot of your network connections. At this point, i am inclined to beleive that the bridge you’ve setup is confusing your system. Sort of a condition, where the system must be prioritized and set to connect automatically to the specific wifi via registry regardless of the bridge. After looking at your network settings, i’ll check and see if registry can be modified to achieve the objective of your issue. Meanwhile, when more than one network connection is available, Windows uses the one with the lowest metric value. By default, it automatically assigns a metric value based on the network connection’s rated speed. So i would suggest that you try this as well:

To force Windows to use a specific network connection, assign a metric value to each one, giving the lowest value to the desired connection:

Open the Network Connections -> Click Properties > Internet Protocol Version 4 -> Click Properties > Advanced -> Un-check “Automatic metric” -> Enter a number between 1 and 9999 for the “Interface metric”."

Never did, that is why I was hoping this tutorial could help. I have a fresh win10 installation, I am connected to a (slow) wifi bridge via lan, which i only need for WoL and when my wifi dongle temporarily loses connection, otherwise, I use the the wifi adapter, but I have to click on connect every tim the pc boots, it just will not connect on its own

Followed all the steps, still does not auto connect when I turn on the PC…

Let me know then. Thanks.

Router is not the problem. All pc cell phone ipad bd player connect automatically. I am sure that this is coming from windows 10!

Could be that password was incorrect? OR Router had the mac address blocked. You can now set up the new password since it works after the reset.
